Sophie Carlick was born and raised in Chapin, SC. From an early age, Sophie learnt to draw and fell in love with fashion. It wasn’t until she went to college that she considered a career in costume design, but she quickly fell in love with using costuming to interpret character’s personalities. It was at College of Charleston that she finally learned to sew, even though her mother is a skilled seamstress herself. She quickly became an asset to the College’s costume shop, where she worked as a paid assistant - learning valuable skills like draping/drafting, alterations, and rigging for the stage.
While living in Charleston, Sophie was fortunate to have many design opportunities as well. She began designing for College of Charleston’s dance concerts in Fall of 2018, and by 2019 was assigned to work on The Lady Demands Satisfaction. Her work on this production earned her first place at KCACTF Region 4 for Costume Design, the Student Choice award from KCACTF, and the Hannah Strickland Award for Excellence in Design from CofC.
After her success, Sophie began working in Charleston theatres, such as PURE and What If? Productions. During the COVID-19 Pandemic she moved to Charlotte, NC where she is currently the Resident Costume Designer and a Professional Teaching Artist for the Ballantyne Arts Center, as well as working with other community theatres.
